Why the Same Strain Feels Different: Phenotypes Explained

If you’ve ever tried a strain because you read about its effects online, only to find it felt completely different when you smoked it, you’re not alone. The truth is, cannabis isn’t as simple as a name on a jar. Even within the same strain, buds can vary in aroma, flavour, and effect.

That’s where phenotypes come in.

Every cannabis plant carries a set of genetics (its genotype), but how those genetics are expressed depends on the environment. This expression — the way the plant actually looks, smells, and behaves — is called its phenotype.

Phenotypes are shaped not only by the plant’s DNA but also by the environment it grows in. Factors that can influence phenotype expression include:

  • Light exposure — intensity, duration, and spectrum can shift how a plant stretches, flowers, and produces cannabinoids.

  • Temperature and climate — cooler nights often bring out purple hues, while heat can boost or suppress certain terpene production.

  • Soil and nutrients — the medium and mineral balance influence plant health and how well its genetic potential is expressed.

  • Watering and humidity — stress from over- or under-watering, or from too much or too little humidity, can affect resin and terpene output.

  • Cultivation practices — training techniques, pruning, and harvest timing also steer the final character of the bud.

Think of it like siblings: same parents, same DNA, but different personalities, appearances, and preferences. Two plants with the same genetic line can produce buds with different terpene profiles, cannabinoid content, and even colours — all thanks to how they were grown.

Phenotypes shape the experience of cannabis in powerful ways:

  • Cannabinoids: One pheno might produce higher THC, another more CBD.

  • Terpenes: Different expressions can lean fruity, earthy, floral, or spicy.

  • Effects: Those shifts in chemistry change how the high feels — more energising, more sedating, or somewhere in between.

It’s why one “Wedding Cheese” can feel dreamy and cerebral, while another cut leans heavy and body-led. The name is just the starting point — the phenotype determines the details.

South Africa’s climate, soils, and cultivation styles mean imported genetics often express themselves differently here. A strain reviewed in California might taste or feel different once it’s grown in local conditions.

This isn’t a flaw — it’s part of the beauty of cannabis. It shows how adaptable the plant is, and why our local cannabis often carries a character of its own.

Strain guides and lab results are useful, but they’re not the full picture. The most important guide is always your own body.

  • Start low and go slow when trying a new strain or phenotype. A couple of puffs can tell you more than any write-up.

  • Pay attention to your experience — note how it makes you feel, not just what the description promises.

  • Remember cannabis is personal. Stress levels, diet, sleep, hormones, and even time of day can shift how a strain interacts with your body.

That’s why cannabis is often described as a journey. Strains affect people differently, and no two experiences are ever quite the same.

Phenotypes remind us that cannabis is alive, adaptable, and unpredictable in the best way. Guides and strain names can point you in the right direction, but the most reliable compass is your own experience.

In the end, cannabis teaches us the value of listening — not only to the plant, but to ourselves.
